Congratulations to Kenn Beer for being awarded the ITE District 8 Rising Star Award. This follows on from Kenn’s award last year as the Emerging Professional of the year in the ANZ Section.
A ‘Rising Star’ award is granted to one person in each ITE District each year. District 8 covers all of the world outside North America.
The award is designed to recognise members under the age of 35 who have already made an impact on the profession, have demonstrated the ability to lead the next generation, and have implemented innovative techniques to solve transportation problems. The ITE Rising Stars Program is intended to identify the next generation of the transport profession.
Kenn was presented with the award by the International President, John J. Kennedy, at the ITE 2015 International Annual Meeting & Exhibit held in Hollywood, Florida in August 2015. Kenn was one of over 1000 delegates to attend the three-day Annual Meeting.
“It was an honour to receive this award and it was a great opportunity to talk to engineers from around the world about their approach to road safety”. Kenn said. “I have had past opportunities to examine road safety in New Zealand and in other parts of the USA such as California and Colorado. The value of the conference was in allowing me to put these experiences into a wider perspective through discussions, networking, and listening to the presentations”.
Kenn founded Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd in 2013 as a specialist road safety engineering consultancy. Since that time, the business has grown to 15 staff with 13 road safety engineers focusing on implementing the Safe System approach in Australia and New Zealand.
“There were some noteworthy sessions focused on safety at the Annual Meeting. Two particularly relevant sessions for our work on the Safe System were on (i) Roundabouts Design and Operations Issues and (ii) Assessing Safety and Integrating Countermeasures. I am especially interested in the application of Safe System Principles to motorcycles and motorcycle riders and found useful ideas from these two sessions.”
