Collaborating to design and build better
This interesting lunchtime webinar was presented by Tricia Malowney OAM CF – Chief Accessibility Advocate, Department of Transport and Planning in Victoria.
Tricia’s role is to amplify the voices of people with disabilities, to ensure that everything they do meets their obligations under State, Federal and International Conventions. She believes that collaboration is the best way to plan and build rolling stock, infrastructure and precincts and will result in resolving complex accessibility issues.

Tricia talked about the challenges facing people with disabilities. We have come a long way in Melbourne since the “red rattler” trains and W class trams, but there is still a lot more to do to make public transport more accessible across the network. Different people have different needs but listening to all the stories in the design process will provide a better transport system for all. Tricia particularly highlighted problems that people face crossing roads, and when there are planned or unplanned disruptions to services, or lifts are out of order.
