• The development of Ballarat West, which is forecast to see Ballarat’s population increase from current 100,000 to 140,000 within 20 years.
  Delivery of the Ballarat Western Link Road – a 16km future arterial road west of Ballarat linking the Western Freeway in the north with the Midland Highway to the south.
• A review of the 2007 Ballarat Road Transportation Strategy.
• The development and delivery of Council’s annual capital works program.

Sturt & Mair Streets largely define the structure of Central Ballarat. Sturt Street is Ballarat’s green spine, linking the CBD with Lake Wendouree and connecting premiere eating, dining & entertainment areas. Mair Street is a major traffic route around the CBD and has many stores, businesses & schools. As Ballarat grows, we need to make sure these two vital streets work for everyone. Safety must be improved. Intersections along Sturt Street account for 10 of the 20 crash hot spots in Western Victoria. Mair Street is difficult to cross and traffic does not flow smoothly. Parking dominates both streets.

The West Gate Freeway, including the West Gate Bridge, is the critical transport link between Ballarat and Melbourne. The bridge carries more than 200,000 vehicles a day, providing access to Melbourne for people in the Ballarat region and growing surrounding suburbs. The Western Distributor will provide alternative to the West Gate Bridge, boosting jobs and economic development in Ballarat through quicker and more reliable travel times.
