The committee of the ITEANZ is comprised of the members mentioned below and consists of formal positions including President,
Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary and occasional members who assist with the various tasks undertaken by the committee.
Howard McDonald
ITEANZ President
As
a Principal Engineer of the Transport Services Section of Hyder
Consulting in Melbourne, Howard is responsible for the planning,
design and management of integrated transport related
infrastructure. He has over 25 years experience in the public and
private sectors, with involvement in a broad range of projects.
These projects have included public transport planning, strategic
corridor studies, traffic impact assessments, road safety audits,
vehicle accident investigations, cycleway studies and major road
design projects.
Having a strong focus in public transport orientated
development, recent projects have included the Vermont South and Box
Hill Tramway Extensions, the Green and Yellow Orbital SmartBus Routes,
master-planning for Warragul and Geelong Rail Stations as part of the
Transit Cities Program, and tender design for the South Morang Rail
Extension in Melbourne’s outer north.
As a recognised leader in the delivery of transport
planning and traffic engineering projects, Howard presently holds the
position of President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers,
Australia and New Zealand (ITE ANZ), is a Fellow with the Australian
Institute of Traffic Planning and Management (AITPM) and a Member of the
Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).

Derrick Hitchins
ITEANZ Vice President
Derrick is currently the Manager of Traffic and Transport
Planning for SMEC in Victoria. Currently based in Melbourne, he and
his team provide traffic engineering and transport planning services
to a range of private sector organizations, Government agencies and
Financial Institutions throughout Australia. With over 4,000
employees, SMEC has a strong global presence with an established
network of over 33 major offices throughout Australia, Africa, Asia,
the Middle East and the Pacific.
Derrick has over 24 years of engineering experience across the civil
and transportation sectors in South Africa, United Kingdom, New Zealand
and Australia. His various international experiences have equipped him
to handle a wide range of projects across different industry groups.
Major projects of note include EastLink, the Brisbane Airport Link,
Ipswich Motorway and the Pacific Motorway upgrade and the Dandenong
Revitalisation Project.
Derrick maintains a keen interest in the world of Intelligent
Transport Systems (ITS), Advanced Traffic Management Systems, Toll Road
Infrastructure and Systems Design. He has a high-level of expertise in
traffic engineering, transport modelling (including toll modelling),
transport strategy/policy development, transportation planning, and
economic analysis and is a skilled project manager. Derrick has also
project managed a range of significant civil engineering projects,
strategic planning studies and public transport initiatives involving
multi-disciplinary teams and government department heads.
Derrick holds a Masters degree in Business Administration, a
Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) and a Diploma of Project
Management. He became a member of ITE in late 2005 and was elected
to the ITE Australia and New Zealand Section Executive Board as
Vice President in 2008. After a short stay in Queensland he has
returned and resumed the role of Vice President of the Victorian
Branch.

Emma Donnelly
ITEANZ Treasurer
Emma
Donnelly is a Senior Traffic Engineer who works part time as a consultant at
O’Brien Traffic with the balance of her time spent as a traffic
engineer at the City of Glen Eira. Prior to joining O’Brien Traffic,
Emma worked as an analyst for a transport consultancy in the USA.
Emma’s particular interests include pedestrian and
cyclist sensitive design, geometric design, community consultations
and crash investigations.
Emma joined the ITE as a student and became an
Executive Board member of ITEANZ in 2004 upon returning to Australia.
Emma has carried out the role of Secretary from 2005 to 2007 and is now the
Treasurer of the Section.

Nick Szwed
ITEANZ Secretary
Nick
has over 35 years of experience in the road safety and traffic engineering profession. Most of this
has been at VicRoads and its various predecessors.
During his last years at VicRoads he worked in the Road Safety Department developing
road safety engineering policy and guidelines.
He carried out
the research to promote and justify the 40 km/h speed limits in strip
shopping centres and 50 km/h in rural towns. He also played a central
role in the introduction of 40 km/h speed limits at schools.
He is currently a
freelance consultant working in the following areas:

policy,

road safety risk
assessment,

the safe system
approach,
·
unprotected road
users,
·
rural road safety
particularly run-off-road crashes,
·
roadside hazards
and road safety barriers,
·
safety aspects of
road surfaces, and

road safety in
land use planning.
Nick joined the ITEANZ Executive Board in 2009 as Assistant Secretary and assumed the role of Secretary in 2010.

Mark O'Brien
ITEANZ Assistant Secretary,
Mark O'Brien
is a Senior Traffic Engineer/Modeller at O'Brien Traffic. He holds Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Law degrees from the University of Melbourne and has worked as a traffic engineering consultant in the United States and Australia since graduating in 2002. Mark's specific areas of interest in the transportation profession include:
- Freeway operations
- Public transport interchange design; and
- Micro-simulation modelling
Mark has been a member of ITE since joining as a
student member in 2000. He joined the Executive Board in August
2005
and has performed the roles of webmaster and newsletter editor since
that time, was Secretary in 2009 and is Assistant Secretary in 2010.

Peter McCombs
District 8 Representative on ITE International Board
& ITEANZ Executive Board Member
Peter
is the Chairman of Traffic Design Group Ltd of New Zealand and has
over 35 years experience in traffic engineering.
He has acted as the manager of the Auckland Travel
Demand Project for Transit New Zealand for the last 4 years.

Daniel Przychodzki
ITEANZ Immediate Past President
Daniel Przychodzki is the Senior Engineer (Traffic)
at Cardinia Shire Council, Victoria.
Daniel has previously worked in both local and state
levels of Government (Knox Council and VicRoads), in a traffic research
and advocacy role with RACV's
Public Policy Department and has private consulting experience with traffic engineering consultants Turnbull Fenner (now known as Traffix Group).
Daniel first joined the Institute of Transportation Engineers
(ITE) as a Student Member in 1998, and became an Associate Member not long after he graduated in 1999.
Now a Member of ITE, he has held a position on the ITE Australian and New Zealand Section
Executive Board since 2001. Occupying the position as Section Secretary in 2004 and 2005,
Vice President in 2006, and President in 2007 through to 2009.

Andrew Somers
ITEANZ Executive Board Member
Andrew
Somers is Senior Engineer - Network Strategy at VicRoads, working on
congestion management policy and programs for Melbourne. He has a
Master of Traffic and Master of Transport from Monash
University.
Since graduating at the end of 2003, Andrew has
worked on a variety of projects including the Freeway Management
System for the Monash - CityLink - West Gate Upgrade and traffic
management for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. He is a past
president of the Monash Student Chapter of ITE and has been the
Student Chapter Liaison Officer since 2005.

Hussain Dia
ITEANZ Executive Board Member
Dr
Hussein Dia is the Associate Director - Transportation at Aecom in
Brisbane. He specialises in ITS and traffic and transport
modelling and has over 27 years of engineering experience in public
and private sector organisations. Before joining Aecom in 2010, he
was Director of the ITS Research Laboratory at the University of
Queensland. Through his research and consulting background, he has
expertise in a broad range of specialist transport consulting
services including planning and design, technical evaluation,
development of smart ITS solutions, and professional development and
training.
Hussein is a Fellow of ITE and a
Member of Engineers Australia and American Society of Civil Engineers.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of ITS Australia, Interim
Executive Committee of ASCE-Australian Section, and Editor of the IEEE
Transactions on ITS.

Peter Daly
ITEANZ Executive Board Member
Peter Daly is the Chief Engineer Traffic
and Roads at RACV, the automobile club of Victoria, Australia. He leads a team
responsible for providing advocacy and information services to RACV members
and the wider community on issues such as road safety, road infrastructure, traffic
management, traveller information and transport regulation. Peter sits on a number of government advisory councils
and expert bodies and is a regular spokesperson on transport policy and road safety in the technical and mass media. Prior to
joining RACV, he lectured in civil engineering at Monash University and worked as a specialist consultant in the transport
industry, primarily as an expert witness. Peter continues to teach road safety engineering in Monash's undergraduate and
postgraduate programs. He has published widely in the fields of transport research and policy and is a regular referee for
international journals and conferences.
Peter joined ITE in 1992 and has held various leadership
roles within ITE, including District 8 Coordinating Council Representative and Secretary, President and Immediate
Past President of the Australia and New Zealand Section. He also was Co-Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee
for ITE's 2005 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Melbourne, Australia.

Don McKenzie
ITEANZ Executive Board Member (New Zealand
Representative)
Don is a Senior Associate, shareholder and Auckland
Manager of Traffic Design Group in Auckland, NZ. Originally from
Canterbury, Don has spent time in both the Wellington and
Christchurch offices of the firm before shifting northwards to help
lead the Auckland office of TDG. Don is a father of two primary
school-aged children and is married to Catherine.
He holds a
Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Canterbury and
has over 15 years experience in the traffic engineering profession
in New Zealand.
He
has been a member of ITE since 2003 and has also been active within
the IPENZ Transportation Group in New Zealand, serving on both
Branch and National Committees between 2002 and 2007

Andrew Edgar
ITEANZ Executive Board Member (New Zealand Representative)
Andrew is a Senior
Advisor in the Integrated Planning group of the New Zealand
Transport Agency. Including its previous incarnations (Transit NZ,
Land Transport New Zealand, and the Land Transport Safety Authority)
Andrew has been with the organisation for 8 years since moving from
Australia. Current work includes providing advice and direction to
regional councils when developing regional land transport
strategies, investigating national transport levels of service, and
assisting the transport planning associated with the 2011 Rugby
World Cup. Given his past experience in road safety and freight
planning, Andrew also provides advice on these topics from an
integrated planning perspective.
Andrew also has a Bachelor of
Engineering and a Master of Traffic from Monash University.Andrew
has a BE(Civil) and a Master of Traffic, both from Monash
University.
As well as being
an ITE ANZ Executive Board Member, Andrew is also the secretary of
the Central branch committee of the IPENZ Transportation Group. He
has also been on the committee of the Engineers Australia Victorian
Transport Branch and was a founder member of the young professionals
section of the Chartered Institute of Transport Victorian branch in
the mid 90s.
Andrew joined ITE
in 1995 as an Affiliate Member and has been a full Member since
2005. He has been on the Executive Board as a New Zealand Liaison
from mid 2004.

Andrew O'Brien
ITEANZ Executive Board Member
Andrew has been the Managing
Director of O'Brien Traffic (formerly Andrew O'Brien & Associates
Pty Ltd) since 1986, after 16 years in the State road authorities
and consulting. He has over 40 years of wide-ranging experience in
the traffic engineering and road safety profession and has been
involved with the ITE Australian & New Zealand Section since 1980.
He has made a major contribution to this section
performing the role of Secretary, Vice-President, and President.
Andrew was elected as the District 8 Director on ITE International
Board from 1996-1998. He has continued to serve on the local Board
as well as holding a number of ITE International administrative
committee positions. He is also a member of ITE and TRB Task Forces
on Roundabouts.
Andrew was recognised by the ITEANZ with the
Contribution to ITE Award in 2005, and by ITE
International when elected an Honorary Member in 2007.
